#HighlySensitivePeople: Tips to reduce back-to-school anxiety (Part 1)

Reducing back-to-school anxiety for highly sensitive people and or introverts requires a combination of strategies that cater to their unique traits and needs. Here are some tips to help alleviate anxiety and make the transition smoother:

  1. Preparation and Familiarization:Familiarize yourself with the school environment before the first day. Visit the school, meet teachers, and explore classrooms if possible.
  2.  Be Honest About Your Feelings: It’s okay to express your fears and worries to trusted others. You’re not alone. Address any specific concerns they might have about school, whether it’s making friends, handling new subjects, or participating in group activies. It’ll relieve tension and you’ll be able to get more out of your learning experience.
  3. Social Support: Participate in extracurricular that align with your interests This can help you find like-minded peers.
  4. Positive Visualization:  Visualize positive outcomes and experiences at school. This can help you shift your mindset from fear to anticipation.
  5. Self-Care: Make self-care a part of your routine. Proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise can significantly impact your overall well-being.
  6. Professional Help: If anxiety persists and significantly interferes with your well-being, consider seeking help from a therapist or counselor who specializes in anxiety and working with sensitive individuals.
  7.  Buddy System: If possible, arrange for a friend or a familiar classmate to be your “buddy” during the initial days. Having someone to navigate the new environment with can offer comfort.
  8. Avoid Overloading Activities: Be mindful not to overload your schedule with too many activities or commitments, as this can overwhelm you. Balance is key.

Every individual is unique, so tailor these suggestions to suit your preferences and needs. It’s important to create an environment that respects your sensitivity and introverted nature while gently nudging you towards growth and adaptation.
