Do you have to do everything yourself? As a highly sensitive person, it’s taken me too long to figure out the answer to this question. The answer is no! Everyone needs a helping hand at different points of their lives.
My perfectionism used to tell me….”If you want something done correctly, you need to do it yourself.” Can any of you relate to this nonsense?
Other non-productive thoughts and actions come to mind. They include:
- I don’t want to be obligated to anyone. Therefore, I shouldn’t ask for help when I need it. Why not, wouldn’t I try to help someone if I could?
- Who would want to help me? Other people have their own problems. That’s true, but people who have my interests at heart will want to help me. People want to be genuinely helpful and feel good when they do.
- I don’t know who can help me. When you seek and ask for help, you’ll find it. Friends, people of the clergy and their members, and different organizations are out there to help you. The internet and libraries are great sources of information. There isn’t a shortage of resources. The problem is our inability to seek it.
- I didn’t involve the people closest to me. People aren’t mind readers. You have to let your specific needs be known. Tell them the problem and ask for suggestions on how to solve it. This will definitely lighten your emotional and physical load.
Are you inclined towards perfectionism? Do you have to do everything yourself? If so, why so? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
