Cliff’s Priority #2 Do you worry too much?

A very important priority for me is to reduce my excessive worrying. Have you ever gotten to a point where you feel like you’re worrying about everything — a point where there’s an almost constant buzz of anxiety just waiting to bubble up to the surface? I’m sure that many highly sensitive people can relate to this fretful state of mind!

One thing I’ve realized is that worry is a mindset. Once you’re caught up in the belief that everything is just about to fall apart, your brain will automatically seek evidence to validate that belief. It’s called confirmation bias. My plan is to catch myself and try to shift my state of mind before my worries get out of hand. I’m going to do this by taking a rational look at the purpose and usefulness of worry. (more…)

(16) The Red Flags Come Home to Roost

When there is a lesson for you to learn, the universe will sometimes whisper gently in your ear. Other times, it will wallop you over the head with a sledgehammer! I unfortunately experienced the latter as my wife and I prepared to move halfway across the country to be closer to our daughter.

In an earlier post, I talked about how I overlooked red flags and ignored my HSP intuition when I hired a long distance mover to relocate us from New Jersey to Missouri. Sadly, all of those unheeded, red flags were about to morph into a giant, red cape to be waved in front of my face by a diabolical matador! Okay…perhaps I’m being a bit dramatic, but our moving troubles were about to go from bad to much, much worse. Our highly sensitive nervous systems would be severely tested! (more…)

What is a priority for you? For me, it’s being healthy.

As I get older, a very important priority for me is to be as healthy as I can for as long as I can. Over the past few years, I faced prolonged health problems and had issues with my new doctors. These health concerns affected every aspect of my life, from the personal to the physical to the emotional.

I was extremely motivated to get into a routine that would return me to a healthy state. After getting a medical clearance from my doctors, I decided to go back to the gym. I met with a personal trainer and told him about my medical issues. We came up with a reasonable program that would put me on the path to fitness, a goal that would boost both my physical and emotional health. (more…)

(17) Do You Want To Be Happy Or Right?

We’ve all heard the old adage…Choose your battles wisely. As a highly sensitive person, I’ve always vigorously believed in this philosophy because I know the emotional and physical toll that conflict can unleash on my mind and body! However, I must admit that it isn’t always obvious to me which battles are worth fighting. The conflicts I struggle with the most are those where I know I am “in the right.” Like many HSPs, I have a strong sense of justice and feel the need to punish wrongdoers.

I was faced with just this type of conflict when my wife and I moved into our new home in Missouri. After a disastrous experience with a long-distance moving company, I spent the first hours in our new home plopped down on the floor…in utter exhaustion and almost boiling over with anger! Not only was I surrounded by mountains of boxes…but also damaged furniture, broken glass, and other ruined belongings! As we unpacked, we would be assessing our damages. I was terrified of what we would find! This was definitely NOT what I had expected to feel after accomplishing our multi-year goal of moving 950 miles halfway across the country. (more…)
