Thanksgiving was a day set aside soon after the pilgrims landed in Patuxet, now known as Plymouth Rock, in August of 1621. The pilgrims pledged thanks to their Creator for their healthy arrival after a long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. It also commemorates the pilgrims' celebration feast of the good harvest. Does a decision have only one solution? The answer is a definitive NO! As highly sensitive people, many of us are conscientious and take decision making seriously. We may view decisions as an all-or-nothing, life-or-death proposition. Do we really need to add extra drama to our lives?

There are often multiple solutions to the dilemmas we face, but it’s human nature to get tunnel vision and limit our options. The key is to expand our thinking, gather information, ask for guidance, and make changes or adjustments as needed. (more…)

#HighlySensitivePeople: Are You Lonely?

Highly sensitive people are not more prone to loneliness than anyone else, though we may experience it in a more profound way. Everyone has some degree of loneliness, and it can manifest in many different ways.

Although highly sensitive people often have social anxiety and may socialize less than average, there are many people who can feel lonely in the middle of a crowd. In other words, a sense of isolation is not always just the result of limited social contact. Many other factors, such as emotional withdrawal, lack of trust, or just not being able to make adequate connections, can cause feelings of loneliness and isolation. Thus, not only is it important for us to reach out to others, but also to do it in a way that feels comfortable. When we feel “safe”, we are able to make much more meaningful connections. (more…)
