Starting your own business can be attractive for many reasons. This might sound tempting if you’re sick of the “rat race” of the corporate world, working with people who don’t share your values and interests, or worried about downsizing in your company.
I knew at an early age that I couldn’t work for anyone. I came to this conclusion when I worked in a corporation and then worked in a family business. I never liked the idea of people telling me what to do, especially my parents, teachers, and employers. I also couldn’t stand having someone breathing down my neck or criticizing me. I needed the freedom to work at my own pace and be able to try new things as I saw fit.
I instinctively knew that if I ever was going to have any degree of success in this world, then I’d have to chart my own path. I found it more difficult to work for someone else than to start my own business. I knew that I’d have to work harder and take more risks, but I was determined to embark on this journey.
Does having your own business appeal to you? If so, you might want to start assessing your wants, needs, strengths, and risk tolerance level. The questions below can get you started.
- What are your interests?
- What activities did you enjoy when you were younger?
- What activities do you enjoy now?
- How do you spend your weekends?
- What skills do you have that you really enjoy working with?
- What types of people do you enjoy being around?
- What is your attitude towards change?
- Can you readily adapt to different situations?
- Are you good at planning?
- How well do you handle risk?
- Are you a self-starter?
- Do you have trouble making decisions?
- Are you good at selling?
- Are you organized?
- Do you get frustrated easily, or are you persistent?
These questions aren’t meant to scare you, but to give you an idea of what it’s like to be self-employed. As I mentioned previously, I’m on the high side of being highly sensitive and it was easier for me to be my own boss.
You can start your business on a small-scale and even work on it part-time while your working at your regular job. There are many resources to help you. The internet has made it easier to have your own business. The only thing that can limit you is lack of imagination and drive. A lack of money isn’t an excuse for not starting.
Do you think you have what it takes to start your own business? This is a personal decision that only you can answer. Self-employment is not for everyone, but for the right person, the rewards and personal freedom can be well worth the effort! I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
