#HighlySensitivePeople: Do you need some tips to find your passion?

Do you need some tips to find your passion? The most common question that I get asked is…How do I find my passion? It’s critical for deep-thinking, creative, highly sensitive people find their passion. We have a burning desire to utilize our strengths and talents, so that we can maximize our potential.

What is passion? It’s a powerful and enthusiastic desire to accomplish something. Some people search a lifetime to figure out what makes them excited and motivated. Others are born knowing what they want to do. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

What are the benefits of finding your passion? Number one is personal fulfillment, but it goes way beyond that. If you have a true passion for something, that passion comes across in everything you do and in the results you produce. As an example, passion may be the only difference between a good teacher and an extraordinary one. If you want to really excel at something, having passion will give you a powerful edge. Your passion will benefit you and everyone you interact with.

My passion is writing. I’m a natural information gatherer and enjoy writing about many subjects. This form of communication suits my abilities, personality, and my desire to help others.

Below are some tips to help you find your passion.

  • Think about the times when you’re the happiest. What makes you happy? Is it a place that you travel to? Is it a hobby that you get totally immersed in? Is there an activity that makes you feel fulfilled? Think about the last time you experienced an exhilarating state. If it’s been a long time, how can you incorporate more things you love into your life, now or in the future?
  • Go to a bookstore. What subjects peak your interest? What magazine articles are you interested in? Is there a section in the bookstore that you naturally gravitate to? The answer to these questions will give you a glimpse into what ignites your passion.
  • Go to a lecture, take an online course, take night classes at your local school or college. Again, the things that you’re naturally attracted to will provide clues as to the direction that you want and need to go. If you go to an in-person event, you might want to note the type of people who attend the event. Do you feel comfortable around these people? Perhaps you can make friends with some like-minded people, and you can explore your interests with others.
  • If you’re in a work situation that you don’t like, it might be time to re-access why you got into this situation in the first place. Was it because you took the first available job? Are there things in your current position that appeal to you? What attracted you to this job in the first place? Are you looking for a career change or perhaps something else in your same field? Explore different possibilities. If possible, seek other opportunities while you’re still gainfully employed. That way, you won’t be rushed into taking something just to get a paycheck.
  • It’s never too late to find your passion. Age is not a factor. Start where you are now, and make a list of your interests and strengths. Be willing to take risks, and seek different experiences. Don’t procrastinate. NOW is the time. You don’t have to go through a major upheaval in your life to do this. Finding your passion is a gradual process, and you can try different things to find the right fit for you.
