Highly sensitive people have the unique ability to improve their self-awareness, by that I mean you can re-acquaint yourself with past experiences and emotions. How did you get where you are now? What can you do to get to where you want to be?
When looking back on your life, look at the positive experiences that you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them. Write them down and refer to them often.
We can all learn and grow from our negative experiences. As painful as they may be, take the lessons learned and use them as building blocks to growth. Don’t use your negative past as an excuse to not move forward in your life.
Look for your positive and negative patterns of living. Don’t repeat the negative ones! This might sound obvious, but how many of us have repeated the same negative actions and thought patterns that don’t work for us? Some of us are slow learners, myself included.
A great path to rediscovery is to write in a journal. I did this over many years. It was both cleansing and painful, but it was a very useful exercise for my personal self-awareness. My book, Making Sense of Your High Sensitivity, is the result of my many journal entries. It’s about my life as a highly sensitive person and the lessons that I’ve learned. I’m gratified that my personal story has helped many people. It’s hard to believe that I wrote my book thirteen years ago. I’m in the process of doing a revision of it. Stay tuned! Perhaps your story can help others too.
You’ll grow as a person as you build your self-awareness. Have patience with yourself. This is a lifetime process. You’ll learn to accept yourself and be more accepting of others. This will definitely decrease your stress. By understanding yourself, you’ll be more self-reliant and motivated to take on the world!
How can you increase your self-awareness? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
