I read a Miss Manners newspaper column about a man who was upset when people mentioned to him that he was so quiet. He said that he was not good at conversation and was frustrated, self-conscious, and embarrassed that he felt he had to defend himself. He asked Miss Manner how he should react. Have you ever felt this way? With some people who I don’t have a lot in common with, I do.
She gave a very good response to remember. It is as follows:
“With all the chatterers in the world, Miss Manners would think people should be grateful to encounter someone who doesn’t try to dominate every conversation. Good listeners are rare and should be cherished. Here is what you could say when challenged: “Well, I know all about me, so I’m more interested in hearing about you.”
How do you handle a comment when someone tells you that you’re so quiet? I’m interested in any thoughts or comments that you have.
